What is a sea burial in Singapore?
A sea burial — also called sea scattering — is the process of releasing cremated ashes into the sea from a chartered boat. In Singapore, this takes place at a designated area near Pulau Semakau, an island off the southern coast.
It is an increasingly popular choice for families who prefer a natural, eco-friendly send-off without the ongoing responsibility of maintaining a columbarium niche.
For comparison see Ash Scattering Singapore (inland option) and Columbarium Singapore (permanent niche storage).
How does a sea burial work in Singapore?
1. After cremation and ash collection, arrange a sea burial through your funeral director or a specialist provider. See Cremation Singapore. 2. On the day, family members board a chartered boat from a departure point (commonly Marina South Pier or Changi Ferry Point) 3. The boat travels to the designated scattering area near Pulau Semakau 4. Ashes are released into the sea — either from a cloth bag, or in a biodegradable urn that is gently lowered into the water 5. Family members may say prayers, scatter flowers, or observe a moment of silence 6. The boat returns to shore
The whole process typically takes 2–3 hours including travel time.
Two methods of sea burial
| Method | What happens | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cloth bag | Ashes placed in a cloth bag and emptied directly into the sea | Simple, immediate, traditional method |
| Biodegradable urn | Ashes placed in a biodegradable urn, gently lowered into the sea | Urn dissolves naturally; more ceremonial feel |
Sea burial costs in Singapore (2025)
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Sea burial service (basic) | From S$100 |
| Sea burial service (full service with family) | S$400–S$800 |

⚠️ Important
Always request a full itemised quote from your sea burial provider before confirming. Some providers quote a low base price but charge separately for the boat charter, biodegradable urn, extra family members, and GST. Get the all-in price in writing.
Why families choose sea burial over a columbarium
• One-time cost — no annual maintenance fees, no niche renewal, no lease expiry concerns • Often more affordable than a private columbarium niche (from S$3,000+) — see Columbarium Cost Singapore • Eco-friendly — ashes returned to nature • No ongoing obligation or visiting schedule • Some individuals specifically request it — a meaningful, personal choice
Things to consider before choosing sea burial
• No fixed visiting location — there is nowhere to 'visit' the deceased after a sea burial. If regular visits matter to your family, a columbarium may be more appropriate. See Columbarium Singapore. • Family consensus — ensure all immediate family members are aligned. A sea burial is permanent and irreversible. • Weather dependency — sea burials can be affected by weather. Have a flexible date in mind. • Religious considerations — most Buddhist, Taoist, Christian, and freethinker families can opt for sea burial without restriction.
💡 Tip
Some families scatter a portion of ashes at sea and keep a small amount in a columbarium niche or home altar. This is allowed. Kenneth can help you coordinate either approach. WhatsApp +65 9112 1226.
