Can you hold a funeral wake at a condo in Singapore?
The short answer is: usually no.
Most Management Corporation Strata Titles (MCSTs) in Singapore do not permit funeral wakes to be held in condominium common areas — this includes function rooms, BBQ pits, pavilions, and void-deck equivalents.
Condominiums are private residential developments, and their bylaws typically restrict common facilities to recreational purposes. Funerals — which require tentage, large gatherings, and sometimes religious rites and burning of offerings — fall outside what most MCSTs will approve.
What should you do if you live in a condo?
Step 1: Check with your MCST. A small number of condominiums do make exceptions for smaller, low-key gatherings. Contact your condo management office and ask directly. Get the answer in writing if possible.
Step 2: Start planning for a funeral parlour in parallel. Do not wait for the MCST answer before contacting a funeral director. Parlour availability fills up quickly — get the booking moving while you wait.
Step 3: Consider an immediate family member's HDB flat. If a spouse, parent, child, or sibling lives in an HDB flat, the wake can be held at their void deck. Eligibility for a void deck booking extends to immediate family members of the deceased.

Funeral parlour — the standard alternative for condo residents
A funeral parlour is a private, air-conditioned room within a dedicated funeral complex. It is the default choice for condo residents and works well for families who prefer a more contained, private setting.
Key advantages over a void deck: • Fully air-conditioned • Private — no public foot traffic • Lockable — can be secured overnight • Private family room with bed, bathroom, and shower • Wheelchair accessible • No residency requirement — any family can book
See Funeral Parlour Singapore for costs and what to expect. See HDB vs Funeral Parlour for the full comparison.
Can the wake be held inside the condo unit itself?
Technically yes — a private gathering within the deceased's own unit is not prohibited in the same way as using common areas. However, holding a multi-day wake with an altar, casket, guests, and religious rites inside a condo unit is logistically very difficult. A funeral parlour is the far more practical option in almost all cases.
⚠️ Important
Do not assume your condo will make an exception without checking. And do not delay funeral arrangements while waiting for the MCST answer — contact a funeral director immediately and confirm a parlour booking as a backup. Funeral parlour availability, especially at preferred venues, can be limited.
