What happens to Singpass automatically

When death is officially registered in Singapore — which happens automatically online once a doctor certifies the death — the following occur without any action from the family:

1. The deceased's NRIC is invalidated in ICA's system 2. The deceased's Singpass account is deactivated

Singpass is a personal, non-transferable digital identity. Once deactivated, no one can use the deceased's Singpass to access any government or private sector services — including CPF, HDB, IRAS, SingHealth, or banking portals linked to Singpass login.

For the full context of what happens when someone dies see What To Do When Someone Dies in Singapore.

Can family members use the deceased's Singpass?

No. Singpass accounts are personal and non-transferable. Using someone else's Singpass credentials — including a deceased family member's — is not permitted and creates security and legal risks.

Family members must use their own Singpass accounts to manage estate matters on behalf of the deceased.

Accessing CPF information after death — the Deceased CPF Member Dashboard

If the deceased made a CPF nomination, nominated family members can access the Deceased CPF Member Dashboard to view CPF account information. This is done using their own Singpass — not the deceased's.

The dashboard is typically available to nominees approximately 10 working days after the CPF Board is notified of the member's death.

For deaths notified to the CPF Board on or after 1 February 2024: eligible family members can log in with their own Singpass to access the dashboard.

For deaths notified before 1 February 2024: only individuals previously authorised by the deceased can access the information. A direct request to the CPF Board is required.

Accessing government services on behalf of the deceased's estate

As the executor or administrator of the deceased's estate, you can manage many government matters using your own Singpass:

• CPF Board — notify of death, access Deceased Member Dashboard as a nominee • HDB — matters related to the deceased's flat (transfer, tenancy, maintenance) • IRAS — tax matters relating to the deceased's estate • MyLegacy — close accounts and cancel subscriptions guide (mylegacy.life.gov.sg)

For matters requiring legal authority, you will need either a Grant of Probate (if the deceased left a will) or Letters of Administration (if they did not). A probate lawyer can assist with this process.

What about Singpass-linked bank and private sector services?

Many banks and private sector platforms in Singapore allow login via Singpass. Once the deceased's Singpass is deactivated, these Singpass-based login pathways are also inaccessible.

For bank accounts specifically — account access is governed by the bank's own estate policies, not Singpass. Contact the bank directly with the death certificate to initiate the estate process.

See Digital Accounts After Death Singapore for a full guide to managing all digital accounts.

What about apps still logged in on the deceased's phone?

If the deceased's phone still has Singpass or banking apps actively logged in, these sessions will eventually expire or be invalidated as the accounts are flagged in backend systems.

Do not attempt to use these active sessions to access services — it is not permitted.

Do not factory reset the phone until you have secured important photos, documents, and data stored on the device. See Digital Accounts After Death Singapore.

💡 Tip

Navigating digital estate matters after a loss is genuinely complex — especially if the deceased did not leave clear records. Kenneth can connect you with estate planning advisors who specialise in this area. WhatsApp +65 9112 1226.
